Purpose and use of the website

Railroad Wiki is an independent educational resource for people organizing maintenance and capital projects on smaller rail operations. These terms describe the scope of the website, its articles, and its downloadable planning tools. Use the resources only for lawful purposes and information you are authorized to handle.

The publication is not a regulator, trade association, railroad operator, inspection service, grant administrator, or engineering consultancy. Reading an article or using a tool does not create a professional engagement, contractor relationship, or approval of your project.

Planning support and professional decisions

Content is general planning education. It does not provide project-specific engineering, regulatory, legal, financial, or operating advice. The tools do not inspect track, interpret defects, establish safe operating conditions, determine regulatory applicability, authorize train movements, or decide whether required work can be delayed.

Use current official requirements, the responsible railroad's procedures, and appropriately qualified personnel for consequential decisions. A checklist status, cost total, funding gap, or dependency warning is an organizational aid, not a certification or recommendation to proceed.

Inputs, estimates, and comparisons

You are responsible for the data you enter and for reviewing the outputs. Verify quantities, units, price dates, quote validity, taxes, access, mobilization, exclusions, funding commitments, and scope boundaries against the actual project. An entered zero is a stated value; a missing value may indicate information still needed.

The site does not provide current contractor prices or guarantee savings. All sample projects and prices are invented demonstrations and are labeled accordingly. A lower entered quote total does not establish that offers are comparable or identify the best contractor. A technology checklist does not certify security, suitability, compliance, or return on investment.

Funding totals do not determine grant eligibility or guarantee an award. An application, possible contribution, or projected saving is not committed funding. A displayed project sequence does not establish an executable operating schedule.

Budget Express learning game

Budget Express uses fictional projects, documents, and game credits to illustrate planning decisions. Scores, badges, and completion reports are game feedback. They are not credentials, engineering assessments, safety ratings, or proof of regulatory competence. No game choice authorizes railroad operations or the deferral of required action.

Game progress exists only in the open page. Download a completion report if you want a copy. The website does not maintain an online score history or recover lost sessions.

Prototype availability and your copies

The project scope builder, quote comparison, technology fit checklist, and capital plan organizer are first prototypes. Features may change, and errors or interruptions may occur. Outputs are provided for your review without a promise that they are complete, accurate for your project, or suitable for a particular decision.

There is no database, account backup, or automatic saving. Download a spreadsheet-compatible CSV, create a PDF through your browser's print dialog, or download a supported project file before you leave. Keep separate copies of important work. See the Privacy Policy for the handling of tool entries and downloads.

Content, photographs, and third-party resources

You may use the planning tools and your generated reports for your own project discussions. Your project inputs remain yours. Downloading a report does not transfer ownership of third-party material linked or displayed on the website.

Photographs are used under the licenses listed in the photo credits. Those licenses and any applicable attribution conditions govern reuse of the photographs. Names, equipment markings, and linked organizations are shown for context and do not imply sponsorship or endorsement. Confirm current content and terms at external sources before relying on them.

Responsible access and updates

Do not interfere with the website, attempt unauthorized access, or use the tools to misrepresent an inspection, professional approval, or funding commitment. The site may revise or remove content and features. Review the current terms and the dates of the references you use.

Nothing on this page is intended to waive rights or protections that cannot be waived under applicable law. The website makes no promise that these general terms address every jurisdiction or project arrangement.
