THE FIVE-STATION PLANNING CHALLENGE

Budget Express

Build the plan. Assemble your train. Make every decision count.

The five-stop planning challenge

Put a better plan on the rails.

One small railroad. Five decisions. A train to build. Read the evidence, assemble a useful scope, compare bids, test a technology idea, and close the funding gap.

YOUR DAY PASS5 stopsAbout 5 minutes · No timer

Earn one freight car at each stop. A correct first answer earns 20 points; a correct answer after a retry earns 12. Hints are free. “Show answer and move on” earns 0 and keeps the journey open. A perfect trip is 100 points.

Every railroad, document, bid, and cost in this game is invented. Credits are game units, not prices or operating advice. Real engineering, safety, inspection, and funding decisions need qualified review.

THE IDEAS BEHIND THE GAME

Explore the five planning lessons.

Read before you play or revisit a decision afterward. These links open in a new tab so your game stays open.

  1. Evidence

Connect each finding to a location, source record, and review question.

  2. Scope

Define quantities, responsibilities, and dependencies before asking for prices.

  3. Quotes

Compare the same work and identify exclusions that still need clarification.

  4. Technology

Match a tool to the workflow, data handover, and support the team needs.

  5. Funding

Connect the complete estimate to confirmed funds and the next decision.

How do I play Budget Express?

Choose a mission and work through Evidence, Scope, Quotes, Technology, and Funding. Read the project documents, select your response, and use the explanation to continue. There is no timed penalty.

Are the projects and prices real?

No. Project names, records, costs, and funding amounts are fictional game scenarios. Game credits are not market prices or estimates for a real railroad project.

Does the game save my progress?

No. Progress stays in the open page. Leaving or reloading can reset it. There is no account, database, browser storage, or online leaderboard.

Can I keep my results?

Yes. At the end, download an Excel-compatible CSV report or select Print / Save as PDF and choose the PDF destination in your browser. The game does not keep a copy.

What if I get an answer wrong?

Read the feedback and try again. You can also use the hint or reveal the answer and continue. The score records how you completed the fictional challenge, not a certification.

Where can I learn more about each station?

Each station links to the relevant Railroad Wiki guide and planning tool. The results connect your decisions to further reading. The game does not inspect track, approve operations, or replace professional judgment.
